ROTOR Swimming Power Plant (Aakash Prajapati)
ROTOR is a small, hydropower plant that provides an easy way to generate electricity by using the current of a river. An estimated 1.4 billion people do not have access to electrical energy. In many regions, the local generation is the only possible way to get power access. For families in rural areas near rivers, the ROTOR means the availability of renewable energy with a permanent output (day and night). It can be used for lighting, cooling, and operating electrical water pumps or for charging batteries and mobile phones. In comparison to small PV cells and wind turbines, the steam turbine has the advantage of producing energy 24/7 without the need for expensive battery storage. The IA vertical axis water wheel is mounted in the center of a circular tube. Induced by the flow of a river, the wheel turns like a turbine. The rotational energy is transferred by the axis to a wheel where several conventional bicycle dynamos — in the advanced version, a specially designed generator — transform the kinetic energy into electricity. The rotor is fixed to the embankment, a bridge, or something similar by mooring ropes. All the materials of the prototype ROTOR are substitutable and are therefore available worldwide for little cost. The distribution of a self-built Rotor or a prefabricated construction kit could also offer opportunities for local businesses and create jobs. An online-Do-It-Yourself manual will be created, which offers a variety of possible materials to be used. Moreover, an affordable prefabricated construction kit which includes the important parts, i.e. tire tube, blade profiles, canvas cover, and a specific generator is being developed. The objective is to provide a stable power output of approximately 100W.
IIT India Low-Cost Rapid Testing Tech Can Detect COVID-19 Within 1 hour (Sayed Mubasir)
The machine can be used anywhere and is designed to be deployed at rural locations with extremely poor resources. It does not need lab facilities and can be handled by anyone, even someone who has no technical knowledge. This 1ft x1ft low-cost portable enclosure is an alternative technology to the Reverse Transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT PCR) machine used to detect the novel coronavirus. The technology works on the principles of microfluidics. Once the oral swabs are inserted into the machine, it produces a simple paper-strip used to run the chemical analysis. Once the chemical analysis is complete, the same unit will produce the results on a smartphone-based application.
Solar Powered Water Purifying Plant (Issam Paracha) :
A Lot of the developing countries are facing one of the major problems of clean drinking water. This is an important issue as Water is the most important and necessary element in human life. Approximately 70% of the human body, water is found in the cells. The source of all body fluids including blood, lymph, saliva, digestive enzymes, urines, etc. is the pure drinking water. Water is the regulator of all body functions. It is the main source for transporting energy to every cell in the body. The brain is also made up of 80% of water, severe dehydration may lead to mental derangement, inability to think clearly. Thus the human body requires a 6-8 glass of pure water daily to function properly. The best time to drink water is in the morning and 30 mins before eating food.
Importance of Pure Water in Developing Countries:
As we all know that water is an important element to regulate the body so drinking water should be pure and hygienic. Otherwise, people may suffer from various water-borne diseases. A Developed country like Japan is supplying pure water in most of the places. The developing and underdeveloped countries are facing the problem of unhygienic drinking water, leading to various water-borne diseases. Yearly many people are dying due to lack of pure drinking water especially pregnant women and children are more suffering from this problem. This problem can be effectively addressed in remote areas by establishing independent Solar powered water treatment plants so that the rural community can be benefited.
Big Data Sharing and Adoption (Selina Gao)
Big data is an inevitable product of the development of information technology and cloud computing to a certain stage. Big data contains two types of meaning. Firstly, Big data discloses that society is converting into an information society which generates a variety of data on a daily basis. Those data produced by societies are called Basic Data. The other meaning is the adopted technology of big data. The core of technology lies in the value of data, which means data that have not been processed or filtered by big data technology are limited value. Big Data collection and analysis can affect people’s lives in all different aspects, which is not only convenient but also directly improves the quality and happiness of their lives. A couple of examples are described in the following that showing the application of big data technology is critical in the era of big data.
Internet of things (IoT)
All items are connected to the Internet through information sensing devices for information exchange, i.e. phase information, so as to realize intelligent identification and management. The Internet of Things is an important part of the new generation of information technology, as well as an important stage of development in the "information" era.
Its English name is "Internet of things(IoT)". As the name suggests, the Internet of Things is the Internet of things. This has two meanings. First, the core and foundation of the Internet of Things is still the Internet, which is an extension and expansion of the Internet. Second, the client extends and extends to any item to item for information exchange and communication, that is, object to object
Smart City
A smart city is the use of information and communication technology means to sense, analyze and integrate the key information of the core system of urban operation, so as to make an intelligent response to various demands including people's livelihood, environmental protection, public safety, urban services, industrial and commercial activities. Its essence is to make use of advanced information technology to realize urban smart management and operation, so as to create a better life for people in the city and promote harmonious and sustainable growth of the city. With the continuous development of human society, cities will carry more and more people in the future. At present, China is in the period of accelerating urbanization development, and the problem of "urban disease" in some regions is increasingly serious. In order to solve the problem of urban development and realize sustainable urban development, building smart cities have become an irreversible historical trend of urban development in the world today. The success or failure of this trend depends on the volume and adequacy of data, which depends on the cooperation between government departments and private enterprises; In addition, the developing 5G network is a universal specification, and if the product is adopted by a smart city, it can be applied in smart cities all over the world.
AR & VR
Pseudo-reality technology is a kind of computer simulation system that can create and experience the virtual world. It uses the computer to generate a simulation environment, and it is a system simulation of multi-source information fusion, interactive 3D dynamic view, and entity behavior to immerse users in the environment. Augmented reality (AR) is relatively misunderstood, and it is not simply created as opposed to virtual reality (VR) -- purely created things like 3D modeling and simulation of the world are easier to understand. Reality is what we see with our eyes, hear with our ears, perceive with our skin, and live in this world. If broadly speaking, using technology on top of reality adds a relevant and additional layer of content, it can be called augmented reality. These two technologies have recently started to cut prices and improve quality, making their way to the mass market. FB launched Oculus Go, a headset that costs just $200. Microsoft also announced a VR system that will work with hardware from HTC, Samsung, and ACER, among others. VR applications started with video games, but now they go beyond them. For example, VR devices can be used for teaching by wiring the plugs and wires in your home, just like hydro-electric technicians are teaching.
PORTABLE WATER PUMPS – helping sub-Saharan smallholder farmers grow crops out of season ( Sam)
Idea: Portable irrigation technology helping sub-Saharan smallholder farmers grow crops out of season.
Problem: When it comes to the food supply, Africa faces enormous instability due to unpredictable climate and poor resources. Only 6% of Africa's cultivated land is irrigated, limiting the volume of crops that can be grown out of season, but increased access to irrigation systems stands to increase food productivity by up to 50%.
Method: Kick Start, a not-for-profit organization that specializes in irrigation technology, is making portable water pumps accessible to farming communities across Africa – most significantly in Kenya, Tanzania, and Mali. These cost anything from $35 to $95 but, putting the emphasis on entrepreneurship, Kick Start is selling the pumps to farmers rather than giving them away.
Solution: Kick Start told The Atlantic that, since 1991, their pumps have lifted 667,000 people out of poverty, helping to "create an entrepreneurial middle class, starting with the family farm". They have pumped new revenues equivalent to 0.6% of the GDP in Kenya alone.
